Cashless treatment is intended to reduce the need for a policyholder to arrange the entire hospital bill upfront. It is a coordinated process between the hospital, insurer or TPA and the insured person—not an automatic promise that every expense will be approved.
The published timelines
A Ministry of Finance release dated 26 March 2026 states that IRDAI-prescribed timelines call for cashless pre-authorisation within one hour and final authorisation within three hours. The latter relates to the discharge-stage decision after the required final documentation reaches the insurer or TPA.
Why a cashless request may still need attention
The government release identifies common reasons for disallowance or repudiation, including exhausted sum insured, co-payment, sub-limits, top-up deductibles, room-rent caps, proportionate deductions and non-medical expenses. A network hospital also does not mean that every treatment is automatically covered.
Before planned admission
- Confirm that the hospital is currently in the insurer’s cashless network.
- Carry the health card, government identification and policy details.
- Ask the hospital desk when the pre-authorisation was submitted and whether information is pending.
- Read the Customer Information Sheet for waiting periods, room eligibility and co-payment.
- Keep copies of medical advice, reports, bills and correspondence.
At discharge
Ask when final documents were sent, which items were not authorised and why, and whether any amount is payable directly. Do not assume that a discharge delay automatically proves insurer fault: first establish when a complete request reached the decision-maker.
Keep the statistic in perspective
The same release reports a claims-paid ratio by number of 87.50% for 2024–25 and says 93% of general and health grievances reported during that year were disposed of within the year. “Disposed” means handled or closed; it does not necessarily mean decided in the complainant’s favour.
